Dermal Fillers & Biostimulators

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in our bodies. As we age, we lose some of the supporting structures, like bone, fat pads and collagen, leading to loose or wrinkling skin, descent or absence of facial features, and prominence of hollows.

Dermal fillers can be used to restore some of this lost volume and structure, or, can be used to enhance existing features to create harmony and balance of the face. This allows for a lifted, hydrated and more youthful appearance. HA filler typically lasts 12-18 months depending on the treatment area and product.

If you have an upcoming special or social event, it is recommended to have treatment no later than 4 weeks before the event to allow for bruising and swelling to resolve.

Biostimulators

Biostimulators are made of either a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA, Radiesse) or poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA, Sculptra). As we age, we lose about 1% of our collagen matrix per year, with an estimated loss of 25% by age 45.

A biostimulator is used by mixing it with water and injecting the product into areas where more support and/or volume is desired, such as areas of hollowing. The water is absorbed by the body over 2-3 days, with the filler matrix remaining behind where a strong network of collagen fibers is stimulated, restoring volume and softening wrinkles and folds.

Results typically take effect at around 3-4 months post treatment, with maximum results after about 6 months. Most patients will require multiple treatments for maximum benefit, typically 4 weeks apart until appropriate amount of product is used. Then return once yearly for maintenance.

Results typically last about 24 months

How to prepare for your filler visit

Before receiving treatment, you should:

- Stop taking aspirin, Vitamin E supplements, and fish oil supplements, as these can increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site and may also lengthen your healing time. Your practitioner will advise you if any other medications you are taking could interfere with your treatment, and so it is important you disclose all medications with your provider beforehand.

- Not drink alcohol for 48 hours before your appointment as this can increase bleeding and bruising.

- Consider taking Arnica capsules for 3 days prior to your treatment if you tend to bruise a lot, this can help reduce bruising.

If you have any other health concerns, make sure to share these with your practitioner, as well, including any history of autoimmune conditions or allergies.

A topical anesthetic will be applied prior to the treatment. Fillers are injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultrafine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort.

Redness, bruising and swelling can be expected in the days following the procedure.

What to expect after filler & after care

Immediately following filler, swelling is expected. Over the next days to weeks, you may notice bruising, swelling and tenderness. This should slowly resolve, and may take up to 4 weeks to settle, especially in sensitive areas such as the lips. Continue to avoid alcohol for the next 48 hours after treatment as this may increase bruising. Icing the area on and off over the next few days can help reduce swelling. You can also apply Arnica gel which is available over the counter.

It is important to avoid aggressive pressure or massage in the treated area. Your provider may discuss gentle massage techniques with you based on the type of filler you received and where. It is also important to avoid repetitive facial movements such as using a straw or puckering in the week following lip filler.

SCULPTRA

In the case of biostimulators such as Sculptra, you will notice added volume to the treated areas immediately after treatment. This is mostly water volume, and will be absorbed by the body in the next 48-72 hours. It is important to follow the massage instructions following your treatment, usually consisting of the 5-5-5 rule (5 minutes, 5 times per day, for 5 days).

It is important to contact us if you have any concerns following your treatment.
